PLAGUES & RECOGNITION:
War Memorial Presidents Plaque

George E. Ghecas Photograph
As a PGA golf professional, Ghecas (1921-1992) brought his innovative golf instruction techniques to winter and spring golf classes at the War Memorial for 30 years. He founded the WAMEGO (War Memorial Golf Association) whose members referred to him as "Danbury's Slammin' Sammy Snead". His greatest joy in teaching golf was introducing beginners to the game. He was a PGA professional for 35 years and was the pro and manager of the Sedgewood Club in Carmel, NY, one of the east coast's oldest golf courses, where his course record 59 stands today.
Ghecas grew up in Danbury, attended Georgetown University and served in the US Army during World War II as a demolition expert with the Office of Strategic Services. He spent time in Egypt where he trained agents for work in occupied countries, and later parachuted behind enemy lines into Greece, where he organized guerrilla forces against Germans on the island of Corfu for 11 months until the country's liberation.
Following WWII, Ghecas fought with the monarchist forces during the Greek Civil War, and in 1950 he trained Korean soldiers in hand-to-hand combat and demolitions on Catalina Island, California in preparation for the Korean Conflict. He received many ribbons and commendations for his service. He served as War Memorial President in 1972-1974.
Korean War Plaque
This plaque commemorates the service and sacrifice of Danburians killed or missing in action during the Korean War.

Daniel A. Garamella Photograph
A staunch supporter of the War Memorial since its early days, Garamella (1920-1985) was the personification of teamwork. Nicknamed "Coach" during his 22 years of service as Henry Abbott Technical School teacher, coach, athletic director, and administrator, Garamella was asked to bring his leadership skills to the city's Department of Public Works in 1980. In the five years that followed, Garamella brought teamwork to the department and was responsible for the largest series of public improvement projects in the city's history.
After graduating from Arnold College in New Haven and Receiving a Master's degree from the Central Connecticut State University, Garamella turned down offers for professional football and boxing careers to pursue teaching and public service. He was a Navy veteran and served in the Pacific Theater in WWII. He had a long involvement in dedicated service to the War Memorial and served as its President in 1965-1967.

George A. McLachlan Photograph & Plaque
As the first president of the War Memorial from 1946 to 1952, McLachlan spearheaded the efforts and guided the plans that erected the building as a pillar of honor to the dead and service to the living. The overwhelming success of the War Memorial is a fitting tribute to McLachlan, his dynamic leadership and untiring efforts for the betterment of our youth and the citizens of our community.
