JFB-MFR is a specialized type of Myofascial Release developed by John F. Barnes, PT. It is the most effective type of MFR and is used to help resolve restriction in the body. "Myo" refers to muscle and "fascia" is the connective tissue supporting every single structure in the body down to the cellular level. Fascia is intergraded throughout every muscle, surrounding every fibril of each muscle cell and covers each muscle acting as the sections in an orange to separate, muscle from muscle, muscle from bone, bone from bone. It is the fascia that determines the strength, length and function of each muscle. If you removed every bone from your body, your body would maintain a shape, much like if you removed the pole from an old boy scout tent, the shape would still be there because of the guide wires. Fascia is the guide wires, and your skeletal system is the pole, releasing restrictions from the fascial system at its deepest level returns the musculoskeletal system to a state of balance, relieving chronic pain, improving postural dysfunction and improving the efficiency of all the systems in the body by putting everything back where it should be. This uses slow, sinking pressure into the fascial barrier and a stretch to the point of resistance for a minimum of 5 minutes. Fascia is made up of elastin, collagen and ground substance, which is a crystalline substance that when restricted, follows the line of restriction putting pressures up to 2000lbs per square inch on pain sensitive structures. This pull not only produces pain and puts strain on the skeletal system to the point of causing postural dysfunction; it also produces an array of systematical stress on all the body systems, often with unexplainable symptoms, Those symptoms are often treated with medication without looking for the cause of the symptoms. As a Myofascial Release Practitioner I am trained to look at the body as a whole system, recognize and address the pain, but more importantly look for what is causing the pain, what activities you need to continue to do pain free and re-establish whole body balance. It is very gentle work, with low pressure applied for a sustained amount of time, to allow the collagenous barrier to release via a piezoelectric effect and the body’s production of interleukin 8, which is a natural anti-inflammatory As the fascia is worked, the ground substance becomes hydrated with fluid and begins to reorganize itself in structure which, in turn releases tension, and relieves the pull of restriction on pain sensitive structures. Many people use foam rollers or stretching in an attempt to relieve the muscle burning, hypertonicity and elongate the muscle fibers, these techniques are effective for breaking up fascial cross fibers and stretching the elastin component of the fascial system, unfortunately the elastin component of the fascia complex is only 20% of the complex. This explains why the benefits are not sustainable.
