“ありふれた、どこにでもあるナイロンの安い布切れを巻きつけて散髪をするのに、違和感を抱かなかったわけではない。どこにもこんな刺激的なツールが存在していなかっただけだ”。そんな風に目を輝かせてカタログをめくってくれている素敵なバーバーたちに、思いが届くとうれしいです

中村商店のモノづくりは“怒り”からスタートした。“既存のカタログに載っているのは、冴えないデザインばかりで欲しいと思えるものがない。海外のサイトでカッコいいアイテムを見つけても、仕入れてくれるディーラーがいない”。馴れ合いのように同じようなデザインのものを使い続けることへの反発心が、店主中村を突き動かしたのだ。“何かできることはないか”と相談したのが、中村の地元でもある、デニムの生産地として有名な岡山県倉敷市児島でモノづくりに携わる職人気質の男たちだった。試しに作ったのは、バーバーツールを刺繍したキャップ。仕事で使うものではなかったが、コームやシザーをモチーフにしたオリジナルデザインのアイテムは、仲間のバーバーたちに喜ばれただけでなく、思いをカタチにする喜びにつながった。

ひとたび動き出したら、あとは進むだけ。思いつくアイデアを職人たちに相談しながら、試作を重ねる日々が始まった。プロトタイプとして作ったのは、「バーバーのためのエプロン」。身近にあったデニムをベースに、パーツにはレザーを用いるなど、職人ならではのディテールにこだわったアイテムが完成した。そして、カッティングクロスやシェービングケープを作るときには、広げたときのカッコよさ、身につけたときの肌馴染みの良さ、そして切った髪の滑りやすさなど、実際にお客様に向きあう 1 人のバーバーとしての意見をぶつけた。使う生地は、デニムやコットン、そして高級スーツの裏地など、一般的なバーバークロスでは採用することのなかったものばかり。エッジの効いた生地にレザーをあしらった中村商店の個性豊かなアイテムは、それまでツールの一つにすぎなかったカッティングクロスやシェービングケープを、お店のアイデンティティや趣味趣向に合わせて選択できる、楽しくて自由なものに変えた。

この中村商店の小さな反逆に呼応したのは、日本全国の“我が道を行く”バーバーたちだった。業界の慣例に背き、独自のスタイルを発信するバーバーたちに、中村商店は称賛をもって迎え入れられた。そしてこの動きは日本だけにとどまらなかった。立ち上げから間も無くして、ニューヨークの前衛的バーバー「FREEMANS SPORTING CLUB」がブロックチェックのクロスを導入。国内外を問わず様々な国と地域に根ざしたバーバーショップが、これからのバーバーのあるべき姿を投影し、クロスを採用しているのだ。web サイトには、海外からもイベント協賛に関する問い合せが絶えず、いまや中村商店の商品は、世界中の情報通のバーバーたちから注目されている。

Nakamura Supply started with the concept “mad”. There are cool items in catalogs and even if it is available on a website from overseas, there are no suppliers in Japan. The idea of opposition against using the same items every time made the storekeeper of Nakamura Supply turn to something to do with our passion for the future. Fortunately, in Kojima City, Okayama, denim production is famous as well, so we asked craftsmen about it. They embroider barber tools on a cap as a trial manufacture. Even if it is not useful to a barber, the cap is embroidered with a comb and scissors. We were very pleased with it. In addition, it was our dream to make something for barbers.

Once we have started, we just keep going on. Since we have been sharing our ideas with craftsmen in making trial manufactures, we have made a prototype, such as “barber apron”. It is based on denim materials and some parts of it are made with leather materials. When we make cutting capes or shaving capes, we face on it as well as one of the barbers so we threw opinions from each other, for example, how the cutting cloth is smooth for skin or how the hair is smooth on the cloth and how the cloth is cool when it is extended.

We use materials, which is never used for cutting cape, for instance denim materials, cotton and lining of a high-grade suit.
There are plenty of identities in bringing our style in Nakamura Supply’s products that are cutting cape and shaving cape and even more, those products brought a valuable pleasantness to our store.

Our concept “mad” came from barbers who have their own style in all of Japan. Nakamura Supply is against the barber industry, but our style is welcomed with praise from other barbers who are disseminating their style. This movement impulse to not only the Japanese barber industry, but also “FREEMANS SPORTING CLUB” in New York that imported block check cloth. On our website, gathering attentions for event sponsorships. It doesn’t matter where the barbershop is located. All we need to think about is that how our cloth is important for future.
