EQUUSOMA: Somatic Experiencing and Equine-Facilitated Trauma Therapy

Integrating trauma and attachment psychophysiology and neuroscience to foster safety, consent, trust, choice, voice and empowerment for humans and equines.

EQUUSOMA® is the integration of the science and practice of Somatic Experiencing and other perspectives in the field of trauma-informed treatment, trauma and attachment neuroscience, and mammalian stress psychophysiology into Equine-Facilitated Trauma Therapy.

It is mainly grounded in the works of Dr. Peter Levine (SE), Dr. Stephen Porges (polyvagal theory), Dr. Allan Schore (attachment and developmental neuroscience), and Kathy Kain, MA, SEP and Stephen Terrell, PsyD, SEP (SE, touch work and attachment). It also draws elements from EMDR (bilateral stimulation), parts work (structural dissociation and other ego state models), Dr. Diane Poole Heller (somatic attachment), Dr. Bret Lyon, SEP and Sheila Rubin (SE and healing shame), Dr. Daniel Siegel (interpersonal neurobiology), Dr. Shari Geller (therapeutic presence), Dr. Jaak Panksepp (affective neuroscience), and trauma-informed mindfulness. It also draws on the literature of the human-animal bond, comparative interspecies neuroscience, and eco-therapy. Finally, EQUUSOMA® also finds inspiration in various pioneering approaches in the field of equine-assisted interventions.
