The new Doc Z’s Sports center is located at 707 North Hickory Street in Du Quoin. The new facility has three batting cages, three pitching lanes/mounds, and one large open area large enough to field a professional baseball infield.
Local baseball and softball athletes are working on their hitting/pitching/fielding/speed/agility/strength/conditioning with instruction from numerous top local talents, including Southern Illinois Miners hitting coach Ralph Santana.
Ralph Santana was drafted in 2001 by the Milwaukee Brewers where he quickly became a prospect for the organization. Within the first five years he was voted Rookie Of The Year and Most Exciting Player in the Pioneer League. Completing 4 years with the Brewers, Santana then signed with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2004. Completing 8 years of professional ball, he played his final years with the Southern Illinois Miners (.342). For the past 7 years Santana has held the position of hitting coach for the Miners. During his coaching career Santana has helped coach the Miners to 7 playoff births out of 10 seasons, and he was selected to coach 5 All-Star games. In 2012 he was named coach of the year as the Miners won
their 1st championship title.
Doc Z, “understanding about baseball/softball physiology and biomechanics is just as important as having a hitting and pitching coach. For example, over the past several years research shows that well conditioned pitchers performed significantly better with proper training than those athletes that did not condition.” Doc Z's Training will offer classes to help atheltes with speed, agility and strength and conditioning."
Doc Z's Sports facility offers athletes the necessary lessons and training to achieve individual peak performance.
