Over the years, through education and experience, we have come to fully understand how important proper fitness is to our daily lives. Without fitness, one’s ability to thrive consistently degrades until they struggle to simply survive. Imagine if you will, a wheel with many spokes...the center of which is fitness or your ability to move through your daily life. While each of us utilize many various supporting spokes around this wheel such as mindfulness, careful nutrition, proper medical care, and harmonious relationships with others, it only takes one spoke to break for the entire wheel to fall out of balance. Oftentimes, when disease, divorce, disability or other stressful life events occur, our fitness is the first item to suffer. We simply don’t have the time, energy, or motivation to properly care for ourselves. The wheel then continues to wobble, putting additional stress on yet more
spokes until the entire wheel falls flat. Our goal is to help others understand the role of fitness in their daily lives and how it helps every other aspect by working together to solidify the individual spokes they are already utilizing.

When the wheel begins to wobble one must first address underlying issues that precipitated the event. In other words, the originmust always be addressed. From a musculoskeletal standpoint this means assessing an individual to determine areas of strength and weakness. To simply jump in and begin any strengthening or flexibility program without first taking a careful, analytical view of the dysfunction would be risking additional injury. The smaller, often forgotten, stabilizing spokes of the wheel must first be addressed before adding additional stress or weight that might cause the wheel to fail. These smaller spokes make up our fundamental movement patterns and are comprised of joint mobility, flexibility, motor control, and strength. Only by assessing such fundamental movement can I recognize individual spoke weakness and custom tailor an exercise program to bring balance back to the wheel.
