ABOUT OUR CLASSES

Tri-State Freestyle Martial Arts is a chain of two martial arts schools currently covering Bell County, Kentucky.

Middlesboro (home school):2219 1/2 Cumberland Avenue (Old Firehouse Video, next to Family Dollar) 7-9PM Tuesdays & Thursdays
Pineville: New Heights Church (next to Subway) 6:30-8:30PM Mondays & Thursdays

Our style is a freestyle martial art combining the traditional past with modern day defenses. It succeeds in blending the philosophy of soft style and hard style strikes, blocks and movements. Hard style has straight and angular movements, where soft style has circular, deflecting movements. Although we keep tradition, we are flexible enough to change with the needs of today's defenses and the student's body type, where before, traditionally, you had to do things a certain way and that way only, even if it didn’t fit you. Our style has taken out the religious aspects of the training. For instance, we do not bow to any shrines, weapons, or ancestors.

The founders of this style took the best techniques of the available martial arts (Chinese, Japanese, Okinawan, and Korean) and combined them into one style. Each Grand Master, through the generations, has studied at least 4 styles and has earned black belts, teaching license, and masters rank in them. Using this method, one could learn 12 different applications or techniques to counter the same method of attack. This allows the student to get a broad knowledge of different styles. It enables them to be able to pick a defensive technique that suits their body type and their personality. Regardless of ones height, build, left/right handedness, or any other physical limitations, one will find techniques that will best fit them and learn 11 more different ways to fall back on. There is an equal opportunity for all ages, heights, and sizes for both men and women.

Styles that have been incorporated are:
Japanese Karate = Jujitsu, Judo, Aikido, Shotokan, and Ninjutsu.
Korean Tae Kwon Do = Moo Duk Kwan, Tang Soo Do, Hwarang Do, and Hapkido.
Okinawan Karate = Isshinryu, Goju Ryu, Shorin Ryu, Shitoryu, and Wado Ryu.
Chinese Kung Fu = Crane, Tiger, Snake, Eagle, Praying Mantis, Monkey, Wing Chun, Kenpo, and Tai Chi.

We will teach to those that show an interest and willingness to learn and follow self-discipline. Our focus is on being street combat ready, not on competition. Because the learning environment is friendly and supportive, members feel like they are part of an extended family. This makes practice sparring more fun and less stressful. In addition, we emphasize first seeking peaceful resolutions to conflicts and using skills for self-defense only. Students are forbidden to use these dangerous techniques in any unethical way.

You will learn:
Open hand and closed hand techniques
blocks, strikes, kicks, knees, and elbows
Throws
Grappling and ground fighting
Free sparring (Kumite)
Modern self-defense
Weapons
Forms (Katas)

Not only will the applications work, but also they will trickle into their daily life like how to walk away from a fight or the proper way to lift something without hurting yourself. It builds confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline, and mental acuity. Students will gain muscle tone and many experience weight loss. The exercises alone will help you to develop flexibility, strength, balance, coordination and stamina through a routine which includes stretching, cardiovascular exercise, and dynamic tension.

The class format includes an initial 45 minutes of exercises, a 15 minute break, and then an hour of instruction. Usually, three or more black belts are at each class to personally assist students who may need additional help. Also, depending on your schedule, you may choose to attend from two to three classes per week.

Students with prior martial arts experience will be ranked according to their knowledge and abilities. Most students when entering a new style, have to start at the bottom again as a white belt and spend time to move up. Here we watch and rank from what you already know from previous styles. We don’t believe in holding you back, and the more willingness and capability you show to learn, the more we will teach you.
